EDUCATION AND SKILLS TRUST FUND BILL SCALES SECOND READING IN OGUN ASSEMBLY, STAKEHOLDERS FORUM SLATED FOR FRIDAY

A bill seeking to establish the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund, aimed at providing a structured funding framework for sustainable educational advancement in the State has scaled second reading on the floor of the State House of Assembly.

The bill titled: “H.B. No. 034/OG/2026 – A Bill for a Law to Establish the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund for Regulating Education Infrastructure and Facilitating Skills and for Other Connected Purposes”, scaled its second reading during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide at the State Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Leading the debate on the bill, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Yusuf Amosun, stated that the bill was designed to promote infrastructural development within the education sector in the State.

Contributing to the debate, Hon. Damilola Soneye, noted that the proposed law would reduce pressure on government budgetary allocations; while strengthening maintenance culture across educational institutions.

Corroborating the sponsor, Hon. Bisi Oyedele commended the initiative and described it as timely; adding that it would increase focus on the renovation and rehabilitation of schools across in rural and urban communities.

On his part, Hon. Lukman Adeleye observed that the bill would add significant value to the development trajectory of the State; while aligning with broader governance objectives aimed at human capital development for youth.

Lending his voice to the debate, a former Speaker, Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, emphasized the need for equitable distribution of resources irrespective of location; noting that fairness in implementation would be key to the success of the proposed trust fund.

Responding, Speaker Elemide subsequently referred the bill to the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology for further legislative actions.

In the same vein, considering the importance of the bill, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has announced that stakeholders’ meeting be scheduled for tomorrow, Friday 17th April, 2026 at 1.00pm to interface with relevant stakeholders in the sector on the need to harness their inputs into the bill.

He stressed the need for an accelerated engagement to facilitate the smooth passage of the proposed legislation.
