Mbappe Makes World Cup History with Second Golden Boot Despite France’s Heartbreak

French superstar Kylian Mbappe has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the first player ever to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice, despite France falling short of another appearance in the tournament’s final.

Global Mirror News gathered that the Real Madrid forward finished as the top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an astonishing 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the prestigious individual award.

The latest triumph adds to the Golden Boot Mbappe claimed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he scored eight goals, making him the first footballer to win the tournament’s highest goalscorer award on two separate occasions.

The 27-year-old also reached another remarkable milestone by becoming the first player since Germany’s legendary Gerd Muller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup tournament.

Global Mirror News learnt that Mbappe has now climbed to the summit of men’s World Cup scoring history with 22 career World Cup goals, overtaking Messi, who has 21.

He moved ahead of the Argentine icon after scoring twice in France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff on Saturday, a result that left the French side finishing fourth at the tournament.

Despite his personal achievements, Mbappe admitted the individual honour could not erase the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup final.

“When you score that many goals in the World Cup, it certainly takes you to a whole new level,” Mbappe said after the match in Miami.

“But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final. It’s good for my legacy once I’ve retired, but right now, that’s not what’s on my mind.”

While France’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, Mbappe’s extraordinary goalscoring exploits have further cemented his reputation as one of football’s greatest performers on the biggest stage.
