Bandits Kill Abducted Teacher After Receiving Ransom

A wave of grief has swept through Zamfara State following the killing of a kidnapped school teacher, identified as Mustapha Yahaya Maru, by suspected terrorists despite the payment of ransom for his release.

Maru, a Teacher at the Federal Government College, Anka, was reportedly abducted earlier this month while travelling to Anka alongside other passengers when armed bandits intercepted their vehicle along a major route in the state.

According to reports monitored by Global Mirror News, the attackers later contacted the victim’s family and demanded a huge ransom before he could regain freedom. Family members and sympathisers were said to have struggled for days to raise the money demanded by the kidnappers.

After intense negotiations and financial efforts, the ransom was eventually paid with the hope that the teacher would be released unharmed. However, tragedy struck on Tuesday May 26, when the terrorists allegedly killed Maru instead of setting him free.

The development has plunged the Maru community and colleagues of the deceased into mourning, with many residents condemning the worsening wave of insecurity ravaging parts of Zamfara and the North-West region.

Residents have continued to call on the Federal Government and Security Agencies to intensify efforts against armed banditry, kidnapping and attacks on commuters across the region.

The incident further highlights the growing concerns over the safety of travellers, students and education workers in insecurity-prone communities, despite ongoing military operations against criminal groups operating in the area.
