Woman Dies After Collapsing at Child’s UTME Centre

A heartbreaking incident has deepened concerns around the ongoing 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), as more details have emerged on the sudden death of a woman, Oluwasola Victoria Adebayo, in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to updated reports monitored by Global Mirror News, the tragedy occurred on Monday, April 20, at Ilara-Mokin Junction, a short distance from the examination centre where her daughter was sitting for the UTME.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the woman had escorted her child to the venue early in the day and was waiting nearby when she suddenly complained of weakness moments after arriving. She reportedly collapsed shortly after, sparking panic among other parents and passersby.

Despite frantic attempts by sympathisers and residents to revive her, she was confirmed dead at the scene.

Further updates indicate that the victim, popularly referred to by locals as “Mummy Ayo,” had earlier informed acquaintances of her plan to accompany her daughter to the exam centre that morning, a routine decision that tragically turned fatal.

At the time of the incident, her daughter remained inside the examination hall writing the UTME and was completely unaware of the development outside until after the exam session.

The shocking development drew a large crowd to the scene, with many residents expressing grief and disbelief as news of her sudden death spread across the quiet agrarian community.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that authorities were notified promptly and took necessary steps. The police also confirmed that the deceased’s family had been contacted.

In a further update, her remains were officially released to a family member identified as Apapa Olamilekan, her son and an officer of the Nigeria Legion based in Akure, after proper identification procedures were completed.

As of the time of this report, the exact cause of death has not been medically established, though initial indications suggest a sudden health complication.

The tragic incident comes amid the nationwide UTME exercise, which has seen over 2.2 million candidates participate across hundreds of Computer-Based Test centres. While the examination has largely progressed smoothly, isolated incidents like this have cast a sombre mood over the exercise.

Residents of Ilara-Mokin remain in mourning, as the incident underscores the emotional strain and unpredictability surrounding major National examinations.
