Lagos Police Set to Impound Vehicles With Hidden, Defaced or Missing Number Plates

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the commencement of a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorized, or missing registration number plates as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat criminal activities across the State.
Global Mirror News gathered that the enforcement exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing criminals from concealing their identities while operating within Lagos.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the operation will be supervised by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai.
The command disclosed that all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the directive within their respective jurisdictions.
Police authorities explained that vehicles found violating the regulation would be impounded and subjected to investigations in accordance with existing laws and established policing procedures.
The command emphasized that the operation is not intended to harass or inconvenience law-abiding motorists but is a proactive measure designed to improve security surveillance and crime detection.
“The enforcement exercise is aimed at enhancing the capacity of police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects, and strengthen the overall security architecture of Lagos State,” the statement noted.
The Police further advised motorists, commercial transport operators, corporate fleet owners, and other road users to ensure their vehicles display valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep all necessary documentation current and readily available for inspection whenever required.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb rising incidents of vehicle-related crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft, and other criminal activities where offenders often attempt to evade detection by concealing vehicle identities.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Lagos State Police Command called on residents to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious vehicles, individuals, or activities through official emergency channels.
Authorities stressed that effective policing and crime prevention can only be achieved through active collaboration between security agencies and members of the public.
