Sanwo-Olu Anoints Hamzat for 2027, Deputy Governor Breaks Silence on Endorsement

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has reacted to his endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the preferred successor ahead of the 2027 Governorship election, describing the gesture as a profound honour.

Global Mirror News gathered that the endorsement, which came amid rising political calculations in Lagos, signals a major step in shaping the succession race within the state’s ruling political structure.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Hamzat expressed gratitude to the Governor, noting that the support reflects a strong belief in his leadership ability.

“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my Governor, my brother and my friend, HE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. His trust means a great deal to me,” he wrote.

He further highlighted their long-standing partnership in governance, stating that their years of working closely to manage Lagos affairs make the endorsement even more significant.

“We’ve worked side by side in the service of Lagos State, and I don’t take this vote of confidence lightly,” Hamzat added.

The Deputy Governor also reassured Lagosians of his commitment to continuity and effective service delivery, pledging to build on the achievements of the current administration if elected.

“I remain committed to building on the progress we’ve made together, and look forward to serving Lagosians with integrity, focus and a clear sense of purpose,” he said.

The endorsement reportedly followed a closed-door meeting held at the Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat is said to have formally declared his intention to contest the Governorship seat.

Sources indicated that the decision was reached after consultations with key stakeholders, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described his Deputy as capable and well-prepared for leadership, citing years of trust, loyalty, and shared governance experience at the highest level.

The development positions Hamzat prominently in the race to succeed Sanwo-Olu, as political alignments ahead of the 2027 election begin to take shape.
