INEC Disowns Fake 2027 Election Timetable, Urges Public to Rely on Official Channels

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly denied claims that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, describing the circulating document as false, misleading and unauthorised, Global Mirror News gathered.
In a statement issued in Abuja, INEC clarified that it has not approved or published any election timetable for the 2027 polls, warning political parties, stakeholders and members of the public to disregard the information making the rounds on social media and other platforms.
According to the Commission, the purported timetable did not emanate from INEC and should not be treated as official in any form.
The Electoral Body stressed that it remains guided by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022, which clearly stipulate the timelines and procedures for issuing notices of election and releasing election schedules.
INEC, through its Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, explained that the Commission would only release the official timetable for the 2027 general election when it becomes legally due and through its recognised and verified communication channels.
These, he said, include INEC’s Official Website, Press Statements, and briefings to accredited media organisations.
The Commission expressed concern over the spread of unverified election-related information, noting that such actions could mislead political actors, create unnecessary tension and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
It urged Nigerians, especially political parties and aspirants, to always confirm sensitive electoral information directly from INEC before taking any action.
INEC reassured citizens of its commitment to transparency, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law in the conduct of elections.
The Commission added that preparations for the 2027 general election would be communicated openly and at the appropriate time, in line with extant laws and best democratic practices.
As Nigeria gradually moves towards another election cycle, INEC advised the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and rely solely on official statements from the commission for credible and accurate updates.
