Ekiti Court Sentences Two to Death by Hanging Over Armed Robbery

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, sentenced two men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of armed robbery and conspiracy.

Global Mirror News gathered that the convicts, Ojo Olasunkanmi (31) and Obamoyegun Dele (31), were arraigned on January 31, 2020, alongside another suspect, Adewale David (36), who died during the trial. They faced a six-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery, later amended on March 25, 2025.

According to the prosecution, the offences occurred on August 11, 2018, at Oganganmodu, off Igbole Road, Ido Ekiti, where the armed men, reportedly carrying guns and axes, stormed the area and dispossessed residents of valuables including phones, cash, a Toyota Sienna space bus, and a DVD player.

The prosecution further told the court that the offences violated Sections 6(b) and 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act.

Global Mirror News also learnt that one of the victims, Bosede Ojo, testified that the attackers initially posed as operatives of the NDLEA before forcing entry into the premises around 1:00 a.m. She said they scaled the fence, broke into the building, and carted away valuables. The incident was later reported to the Police.

The prosecution presented nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits including defendants’ statements, a black axe, 15 SIM cards, mobile phones, a Toyota Sienna vehicle, and photographs.

The defendants, represented by their lawyers, did not call any witnesses in their defence.

Delivering judgment, Justice Bamidele Omotoso ruled in favour of the prosecution, stating that the defendants were guilty as charged. He subsequently sentenced Ojo Olasunkanmi and Obamoyegun Dele to death by hanging.
