Doctors Suspend Services at FMC Abeokuta Over Rising Cases of Theft and Insecurity

Medical services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State, have been disrupted following an industrial action embarked upon by resident Doctors over recurring incidents of theft and security breaches within the hospital premises.
According to information gathered by Global Mirror News, the strike was declared by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FMC Abeokuta, after members expressed growing concerns over what they described as persistent cases of burglary and theft targeting healthcare workers in the Institution.
The Doctors alleged that several incidents involving the theft of personal belongings, electronic devices and other valuables have been recorded in offices, call rooms and residential quarters within the hospital. They lamented that despite repeated complaints, adequate measures had not been put in place to curb the security challenges.
The development has reportedly created fear and uncertainty among medical personnel, with many Doctors insisting that their safety can no longer be guaranteed while carrying out their duties.
Sources familiar with the matter told Global Mirror News that the decision to down tools followed a series of consultations by members of the association, who resolved that work could not continue under the prevailing security situation.
The Doctors are demanding urgent intervention by the hospital management, including the strengthening of security arrangements across the facility, installation of modern surveillance equipment, tighter access control measures and a thorough investigation into reported theft cases.
The strike has raised concerns among patients and their relatives, many of whom fear that the disruption could affect access to medical care and delay treatment for those requiring urgent attention.
Healthcare stakeholders have also expressed concern over the situation, noting that a safe working environment is essential for effective healthcare delivery and staff productivity.
As efforts continue to resolve the dispute, Global Mirror News understands that discussions are ongoing between the hospital management and representatives of the Doctors aimed at addressing the security concerns and restoring normal services at the Institution.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing concerns about safety and security in public healthcare facilities across Nigeria, where medical workers increasingly face challenges beyond their professional responsibilities.
