Relief as Abducted UI Law Student, Seven Others Regain Freedom After 22 Days

After spending 22 days in the hands of kidnappers, a 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan, Miss Abolarin Tomisin, and seven other abducted victims have regained their freedom.

Global Mirror News gathered that the release was confirmed on Monday, July 6, 2026, by the President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Temidayo Adeboye, who described the development as a huge relief to the University community and the families of the victims.

According to Adeboye, the release followed official confirmation from the relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation involved. He disclosed that the victims are currently undergoing necessary post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations.

“We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon,” he said.

The Students’ Union expressed appreciation to Security Agencies, the University management, the leadership of Scripture Union Nigeria, and everyone who played vital roles in securing the victims’ freedom.

The Union also thanked members of the university community for their prayers, patience, solidarity and unwavering support throughout the period of captivity.

“As we celebrate this welcome news, we remain grateful to God and pray for the complete healing, restoration and well-being of everyone affected,” the statement added.

The victims, including the National General Director of Scripture Union Nigeria, Uwem Cosmas, were abducted on June 14, 2026, along the Imo-Anambra boundary while returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe.

Earlier, Adeboye had revealed that Tomisin was travelling with the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Uwem Cosmas, and other conference participants when the incident occurred.

He also clarified that Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of the University of Ibadan chapter, was the only UI student among those abducted, dismissing social media reports suggesting that several students of the institution were involved.

Following their release, a video circulated online showing emotional scenes of praise, worship and thanksgiving as the freed victims joined fellow believers in expressing gratitude to God for preserving their lives throughout the traumatic ordeal.

The incident had sparked widespread concern across the country and renewed calls for improved security on highways, particularly in the South-East, where kidnappings for ransom have continued to pose serious threats to travellers.
