Ogun Moves Toward 24-Hour Power, Launches Statewide Electricity Audit

Prince Dapo-Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to carry out a comprehensive electricity consumption audit as part of efforts to enhance power supply efficiency and move the State closer to 24-hour electricity.

The Governor disclosed this during an unscheduled inspection of the 4-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.

According to Gov Abiodun, the audit will provide accurate data on the State’s electricity usage while enabling authorities to monitor how power generated from the facility is distributed. He added that the initiative would also help identify system leakages and curb energy theft.

The move, he noted, follows the state’s expanded regulatory authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity—an opportunity the Government intends to fully leverage to strengthen the power sector.

Describing electricity as a cornerstone of industrial growth, the governor emphasised that reliable power supply is critical to driving economic development and attracting investment.

He explained that the 4-megawatt plant, developed under the Ogun State Light-Up Project, is a key component of the State’s broader strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency and ensure inclusive access to electricity.

Abiodun further revealed that both the 34-megawatt power facility in Onijanganjangan and the Oke-Mosan plant were built with expansion capacity, alongside upgrades to the State’s distribution infrastructure to improve efficiency and reach.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustainable development, the Governor said ongoing reforms in the power sector are designed to guarantee stable electricity for residents and businesses.

“What you see here is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant generating four megawatts—clean and efficient. This reflects our commitment to delivering on promises without unnecessary fanfare.

“It is unacceptable that some power facilities have remained idle for over 16 years, relying on outdated fuel systems. In this era, such inefficiencies should not exist,” he said.

He also announced that the newly established Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission will oversee electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state, ensuring compliance and improved service delivery.

Gov. Abiodun added that the state is positioning itself as a prime destination for investors by leveraging its competitive advantages, with a long-term goal of providing affordable, round-the-clock electricity.

“Our vision is to make Ogun State the preferred destination for investors—where 24-hour power supply is reliable and cost-effective,” he stated.
