Messi reacts after setting new FIFA World Cup scoring record

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has reacted after making history as the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Global Mirror News gathered that Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in their Group J clash at Dallas Stadium on Monday night, taking his total number of World Cup goals to 18.
The 38-year-old had equalled the previous record of 16 goals, held by former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening 3-0 win over Algeria.
After missing an early penalty against Austria, Messi opened the scoring in the first half to move ahead of Klose. He added a second goal late in the game to extend his record and help Argentina secure qualification for the knockout stage with a match to spare.
Speaking after the historic performance, Messi played down the personal achievement, insisting that his focus was on Argentina’s victory.
“I am tired now, I’m not thinking about that,” Messi told Fox Sports in Spanish.
“I just want to enjoy the win with my teammates. We’ve already given people many moments of joy, but we’ll try to give them even more.”
Messi’s brace means he is now two goals clear of Klose’s long-standing 16-goal record, which had stood since 2014.
Klose, who is now in management, congratulated the Argentine star and described him as the greatest footballer of all time.
“For me, Lionel Messi is the best of all time,” Klose told Süddeutsche Zeitung. “Congratulations, champ!”
The record-breaking display also strengthened Argentina’s title defence at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the reigning champions maintaining a perfect start to the tournament.
