Teen Charged After Fatal Stabbing of 17-Year-Old Boy

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the death of 17-year-old Jamal Coombes, who was fatally stabbed in Battersea, South London.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the suspect was charged with murder and possession of a bladed article after Jamal was attacked in the early hours of Saturday, June 20.

Because of his age, the 14-year-old cannot be named under UK law. He was scheduled to appear before Highbury Corner Youth Court on Monday, June 22.

Police said officers were called to Glycena Road at about 4:20am after receiving reports of a stabbing believed to have followed an altercation in the area.

Officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance and found Jamal with serious injuries. Despite emergency efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The killing has left the Battersea community in mourning, with flowers, candles and handwritten messages placed along Glycena Road, where the teenager was attacked.

One message read, “You were destined for greatness,” while another tribute said, “I love you Jamal RIP angel.” A separate note urged the teenager to “fly high in the highest heavens.”

Two other teenagers — a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were also arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. They have since been released on bail while detectives continue their enquiries.

Jamal’s family has been informed of his death and is being supported by specially trained police officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie said investigators were still working to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal attack.

“Our thoughts remain firmly with Jamal’s loved ones following his tragic death,” Howie said, adding that police understand the impact the incident has had on residents in the area.

He appealed directly to members of the public who may have been in the Lavender Hill area between 3:30am and 5am on Saturday, especially around Glycena Road, Acanthus Road and Pountney Road.

Police believe there was an altercation before the attack and are seeking anyone who may have seen people running from the area.

Detectives are also asking residents and motorists to review any CCTV, doorbell-camera or mobile-phone footage recorded around the time of the incident, stressing that even seemingly minor information could be important to the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
