Mother, Stepfather Detained After Teenage Son Dies Following Alleged Punishment

The Kaduna State Police Command has detained a woman and her husband following the death of her teenage son in the Kurmin-Mashi area of Kaduna State.
Global Mirror News gathered that the incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, after the boy, identified as Sadiq, was allegedly subjected to severe punishment over an accusation of dishonesty.
Sources said Sadiq’s mother, Hauwa’u Adamu, popularly known as Maman Sadiq or Aunty Laraba, had sent him to withdraw N5,000 from a Point of Sale operator.
However, it was alleged that the teenager carried out two separate withdrawals but returned home with only N5,000. His stepfather, Sharhabil, was said to have followed him to the PoS operator, who reportedly confirmed that two withdrawals had been made.
Following the confirmation, the couple allegedly confronted Sadiq and punished him at their residence.
A female neighbour reportedly heard the teenager crying at about 10pm on Monday and went to the house to plead with the couple to stop. The neighbour was said to have also contacted an Islamic cleric in the area, who visited and reportedly cautioned the couple against the severity of the punishment.
Global Mirror learnt that despite the intervention, the boy was allegedly left in a critical condition.
Sadiq was confirmed dead on Tuesday, June 23 2026 morning.
Police operatives attached to the Kurmin-Mashi Division reportedly visited the scene and moved the teenager’s body to Yusuf Dantsoho Hospital, also known as Dutse General Hospital, for examination to determine the cause of death.
Hauwa’u Adamu and her husband, Sharhabil, have been detained as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to release further details after the outcome of the medical examination and police investigation.
