Nigerian Woman Dies Hours After Giving Birth to Quintuplets Following 14-Year Wait

A wave of grief has swept through Akure, Ondo State, after a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Mary Yaduyan, died just hours after delivering a rare set of quintuplets—five baby boys—ending a long-awaited journey to motherhood in heartbreak.

Global Mirror News gathered that the deceased had battled childlessness for 14 years before successfully conceiving in 2025 through an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedure, a breakthrough that brought immense joy to her family.

The delivery, which took place at a specialist hospital known for handling high-risk multiple births, was initially declared successful.

However, tragedy struck approximately four hours later when Mrs. Yaduyan reportedly developed complications identified by medical experts as a pulmonary embolism—a sudden blockage in the lungs caused by blood clots.

Sources within the hospital disclosed that the late mother had maintained consistent antenatal care throughout her pregnancy, with no major complications recorded until around the 31st week.

At that point, she experienced a premature rupture of membranes and was placed under strict medical supervision.

A lead consultant, who spoke anonymously, revealed that her condition was carefully managed to extend the pregnancy to a safer gestational stage. He also noted that she had a medical history of uterine fibroids, which had been surgically removed two years prior.

According to the consultant, Mrs. Yaduyan had complained of chest pain before delivery, prompting the involvement of a cardiologist. Initial evaluations, however, did not indicate any immediate life-threatening condition.

“Following the caesarean section, her vital signs were stable. There was no excessive bleeding, and she was closely monitored due to the high-risk nature of the birth,” the doctor explained.

Despite these reassurances, her condition deteriorated suddenly. Medical personnel initiated emergency resuscitation efforts, but she could not be revived.

The hospital community has since been thrown into mourning, as what began as a celebratory moment turned into a devastating loss.

Speaking to Global Mirror News, the deceased’s elder sister, Mrs. Olusola Ajayi, recounted the painful final moments. She revealed that her sister had briefly interacted with family members after the delivery and even made a request for food before declining it moments later.

Ajayi further disclosed that the family had been in constant communication with the deceased’s husband, who is based abroad, via video call during the procedure.

Jubilations had filled the air after the successful delivery, with relatives informing their mother and celebrating what they believed was a miracle.

“That joy didn’t last long,” she said. “When I returned after getting medications for the babies, the room was filled with people, and she was unresponsive. That was how we lost her.”

She added that the family ensured she received the best possible medical care and bore no immediate grievances toward the hospital, describing the incident as a painful and unexpected loss.

The quintuplets are said to be receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.
