Messi Opens Up on Personal Struggles After Matching World Cup Goal Record

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has revealed that he is battling an undisclosed personal challenge, despite reaching another remarkable milestone in his illustrious football career during Argentina’s World Cup victory over Algeria.

Global Mirror News gathered that the football icon became visibly emotional after scoring just 17 minutes into the match, breaking down in tears as he celebrated the goal. The emotional moment came during what would become a historic night for the veteran forward.

Messi, who is set to celebrate his 39th birthday in a week, went on to score a hat-trick as Argentina secured a convincing 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City. His three goals saw him equal the men’s FIFA World Cup scoring record of 16 goals previously held by German legend Miroslav Klose.

While fans celebrated his achievement, Messi disclosed after the match that he has recently been dealing with personal difficulties away from football.

“The truth is, it’s something completely unrelated to sports,” Messi said.

“I had some difficult, complicated days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and all my teammates because they were always by my side, as always, giving me a lot of strength to be okay, and that’s all.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner chose not to reveal details of the issue, keeping the nature of his personal struggles private. Instead, he shifted focus to expressing gratitude for the support he has received from his teammates and the Argentine camp.

Messi also reflected on the significance of the occasion, which marked his 200th appearance for Argentina, describing the experience as one of the most rewarding moments of his career.

“Everything I’m experiencing now is amazing,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to achieve all my dreams, at a level, or even more, than I could have reached individually and as part of a team.”

The Inter Miami star added that he continues to cherish every moment on the pitch and remains motivated by the same passion that drove him as a child.

“Today I’m enjoying this, being part of a wonderful group, feeling good and, thankfully, being able to enjoy it on the field the way I’ve always loved to,” he said.

“Everything I’ve experienced is so much more than I could have imagined when I was a kid.”

Messi further revealed that he sees similarities between himself and Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal, citing their shared determination to always perform at their highest level.

“I love playing football; it’s been my passion since I was little, and when I’m feeling good, I give it my all,” he explained.

“I think we’re very similar in that sense—that I always want to give my best, I always want to feel good, and I enjoy it that way. As long as I can, and I’m fit to do it, I’ll continue.”

Despite the mystery surrounding his personal situation, Messi’s latest performance once again demonstrated his resilience and enduring brilliance, as he continues to write new chapters in one of football’s greatest careers.
