Fresh COVID-19 Case Confirmed in Cross River, Sparks Renewed Concern in Nigeria

There is growing concern across Nigeria following the confirmation of a fresh case of COVID-19 in Cross River State, marking one of the first reported infections in recent years after a long period of decline.

Global Mirror News gathered that the new case was detected in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, involving a 53-year-old Chinese national who tested positive for the virus.

Health authorities disclosed that the patient arrived in Nigeria on March 17, 2026, but began showing symptoms around April 10, suggesting the possibility of local transmission after the incubation period.

The Cross River State Ministry of Health confirmed that the individual has been placed under isolation, while emergency response measures have been activated. Contact tracing has also commenced, with Health Officials identifying and monitoring persons who may have come in contact with the patient.

Commissioner for Health in the State, Henry Ayuk, stated that surveillance teams have been deployed to the affected area to curb any potential spread, assuring residents that the situation is under control despite the renewed fear.

The development represents the first notable COVID-19 case recorded in the State since 2022, raising fresh concerns about the virus, which had significantly declined in Nigeria following the global outbreak.

Health experts and officials, including those working with the World Health Organization, have warned that COVID-19 has not been completely eradicated globally, noting that new variants still pose risks and require continued vigilance.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is expected to sustain Nationwide monitoring, as authorities urge Nigerians to maintain hygiene practices and promptly report symptoms.

Global Mirror News reports that while the Government insists the situation is under control, the latest development has reignited public health concerns and calls for sustained preventive measures to avoid another widespread outbreak.
