FG Approves Major NYSC Overhaul, Introduces 11 Specialised Streams, Six-Week Orientation Camp

The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing an expanded six-week orientation programme, 11 specialised service streams, a new deployment model, and a civilian leadership structure for the scheme.

Global Mirror News gathered that the approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its meeting on Monday, June 29, 2026, marking what officials described as the first comprehensive review of the NYSC since its establishment in 1973.

Speaking after the meeting, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, alongside the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the reforms are designed to modernise the scheme and better prepare Nigerian graduates for National development and employment opportunities.

According to Global Mirror News, one of the key changes is the extension of the orientation camp from three weeks to six weeks, divided into three distinct phases.

The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, leadership development and promoting National values.

The second phase will cover career mapping, financial literacy, business planning, basic accounting and access to funding opportunities. A structured Career Day programme will also be introduced to connect corps members with employers and industry stakeholders.

The final two weeks will be dedicated to specialised training based on each corps member’s chosen career stream, academic background and skill set.

11 Specialised NYSC Streams

Under the new framework, prospective corps members will be required to choose one of the following specialised streams during registration:

  • Agric Corps
  • Medical Corps
  • Education Corps
  • Tech and Digital Corps
  • Legal Corps
  • Public Service Corps
  • Infrastructure Corps
  • Green Corps
  • Enterprise Corps
  • Creative Economy Corps
  • Paramilitary and Security Corps

Officials explained that corps members will receive specialised training within their selected stream and will be formally recognised under that category throughout their service year.

The Government said the initiative is aimed at equipping graduates with practical skills that align with their career interests while addressing critical workforce needs across different sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Security to Influence Deployment

The reform also introduces a security-sensitive deployment policy. According to Usman, corps members will now be posted to states after considering prevailing security conditions, ensuring safer deployments across the country.

Civilian to Lead NYSC

Another major change is the transition of NYSC leadership from military to civilian administration. While a civilian will head the scheme, the military will continue to provide security support during orientation camps and throughout the service year.

Officials said the move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader human capital development strategy aimed at building a $1 trillion economy.

New Uniform and Graduation Ceremony

The reforms also include the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to reflect professionalism and national identity.

In addition, the traditional Passing Out Parade (POP) will be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony, while orientation camps Nationwide will undergo standardisation through a national grading and certification system to improve the quality of facilities and training.

Legal Backing Underway

The Federal Executive Council has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to provide legal backing for the approved reforms.

The Government described the changes as a landmark transformation that modernises every major aspect of the NYSC programme, from registration and orientation to deployment and skills development.
