UI Law Student Abducted After Religious Conference, SUG Clarifies Only One Student Missing

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level Law student, Tomisin Abo, while clarifying that reports claiming eight UI students were missing are inaccurate.

Global Mirror News gathered that Tomisin, a student of the Faculty of Law, was part of a group that attended the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State. She reportedly travelled alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.

According to a statement issued by the SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, Tomisin is currently the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, as well as the Vice President of the Scripture Union chapter at the University of Ibadan.

The Union explained that Tomisin was returning from the conference when communication with her was suddenly lost. Concerns over her whereabouts heightened after she failed to appear for her scheduled faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.

Adeboye stated that the Students’ Union had already begun engaging relevant stakeholders to establish the facts surrounding the incident and support efforts aimed at securing her release.

“We have initiated the necessary engagements to ascertain the facts surrounding the situation,” the statement noted, adding that contacts had been established with religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate appropriate intervention.

The SUG further clarified that Tomisin remains the only University of Ibadan student currently unaccounted for. Reports indicated that another UI student from the Department of Music who also attended the conference returned safely.

However, information available suggests that the vehicle conveying Engr. Uwem Cosmos, the National General Director of the fellowship, has also remained unaccounted for since the journey.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Ademola Lewis, confirmed that the Institution is aware of the development. He noted that the University was not informed beforehand about the trip but assured that efforts were underway to ensure the student’s safe return.

Dr. Lewis also appealed to members of the University community and the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could complicate ongoing efforts by security agencies.

Authorities are yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the abduction as investigations continues.
