Iran Moves to Challenge FIFA Over World Cup Travel Restrictions

Iran’s Football Federation has announced plans to submit an official complaint to FIFA over travel restrictions imposed on the Country’s National Team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that the measures create an uneven playing field compared to other participating Nations.
According to Global Mirror News findings, the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), members of the Iranian squad are only permitted to enter the United States one day before a scheduled match and must leave the Country on the same day after playing. The United States is co-hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.
Iranian officials contend that the restrictions disrupt the team’s preparation, recovery, and overall tournament logistics, placing them at a competitive disadvantage.
The issue came into sharper focus following Iran’s opening Group G encounter against New Zealand in Los Angeles, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Speaking after the match, head coach Amir Ghalenoei described Iran as the “most oppressed” team at the World Cup, citing the challenges created by the travel requirements.
In a statement, the FFIRI said the restrictions contradict FIFA’s principle of ensuring equal treatment and fair conditions for all participating teams.
“The Football Federation of Iran believes that such restrictions are inconsistent with the principle of providing equal conditions for all participating teams and may negatively affect teams’ preparation processes,” the federation stated.
The Governing body added that it would formally register its dissatisfaction with FIFA and seek a review of the conditions under which the Iranian team is participating.
The dispute is the latest in a series of logistical challenges surrounding Iran’s World Cup campaign. Earlier, the team was forced to relocate its tournament base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, after visa complications reportedly affected several federation officials and support staff.
Iranian authorities have also raised concerns over restrictions impacting delegation members, media representatives, and supporters travelling to matches in the United States.
As the tournament progresses, the Federation hopes FIFA will address its concerns, insisting that all Nations competing on football’s biggest stage should be afforded equal conditions and opportunities throughout the competition.
