Lagos Govt Bans Goods, Heavy Luggage on Public Buses From June 1

The Lagos State Government has announced a statewide ban on the transportation of goods and heavy luggage on regulated public transport buses, with enforcement set to begin on June 1, 2026.

Global Mirror News gathered that the directive was issued by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority following rising complaints from commuters over discomfort, safety concerns, and disruptions caused by the growing use of public buses for hauling goods.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the transport authority said the decision was reached after a strategic meeting with heads of operations and maintenance of various bus operating companies across the state.

According to LAMATA, operators unanimously agreed that the practice of conveying goods and oversized luggage on regulated buses had become a major challenge affecting passenger convenience and the efficiency of transport services in Lagos.

The Agency warned that enforcement of the new directive would be strict, stressing that any driver caught transporting goods after the deadline would face immediate dismissal and blacklisting from the system.

The statement further noted that terminal officials, ground staff, or LAMATA personnel found assisting or permitting the loading of goods onto buses would also be summarily dismissed without exception.

Global Mirror News gathered that the government said the measure forms part of broader efforts to restore order, improve safety standards, and ensure efficient service delivery within the state’s public transportation network.

Residents, commuters, transport operators, and terminal managers have therefore been advised to make alternative arrangements for moving goods ahead of the enforcement date.

LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to providing Lagos residents with a safer, more reliable, and commuter-friendly transport system.
