Relief as Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers Regain Freedom After Weeks in Captivity

There was widespread relief on Thursday after the Presidency confirmed the release of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety and uncertainty for their families.

The victims, comprising 39 pupils and seven teachers, were kidnapped in May when armed men invaded schools in the Ahoro, Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire LGA. The attack, which also claimed the life of a teacher and left security personnel injured during rescue efforts, sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in schools across the country.

Presidential sources disclosed that the victims have now regained their freedom following sustained security operations involving intelligence agencies and security personnel. Details surrounding the circumstances of their release were not immediately disclosed.

The abduction had triggered protests by parents, community leaders and teachers’ unions, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State embarking on industrial action to demand the safe return of their colleagues and pupils. The strike was later suspended after assurances from authorities that efforts to rescue the captives had intensified.

Throughout the period of captivity, the Oyo State Government consistently maintained that no ransom was paid for the release of the victims and urged residents to remain calm while security agencies pursued the rescue mission.

The incident is among a growing number of mass school abductions that have continued to challenge Nigeria’s security architecture and raise concerns about the safety of pupils and teachers, particularly in rural communities.
