Canada Deports 366 Nigerians as Nearly 1,000 Face Removal

Canada has deported 366 Nigerian Nationals while 974 others remain in the queue for removal, according to the latest figures released by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Global Mirror News reports.

The data, covering the period between January and October 2025 and updated as of November 25, 2025, show Nigeria ranking ninth among Countries whose citizens were deported from Canada during the period.

Nigeria also ranks fifth Globally in terms of pending deportations, underscoring a renewed enforcement push by Canadian Immigration Authorities.

CBSA records indicate that the 974 Nigerians listed as “removal in progress” are individuals who have received enforceable removal orders but are yet to be deported due to ongoing administrative, legal, or logistical processes.

Canadian Authorities maintain that removals are carried out strictly in line with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which mandates the deportation of Foreign Nationals found inadmissible.

Reasons for inadmissibility include failed refugee claims, overstaying visas, misrepresentation, criminality, security concerns, health grounds, or failure to comply with immigration regulations.

Officials note that the majority of deportees are unsuccessful asylum seekers whose applications have been exhausted through Canada’s legal processes.

Historical trends show fluctuations in the number of Nigerians removed from Canada.

While deportations dropped significantly between 2020 and 2023, Nigeria has re-emerged on the list in 2025, reflecting a broader tightening of immigration enforcement amid domestic pressures.

In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, Canada reportedly deported over 18,000 individuals across all Nationalities, spending tens of millions of dollars on removal operations.

The Federal Government has also committed additional funding to border control and immigration enforcement, citing housing shortages, labour market strain, and National security concerns.

Nigeria remains the only African Country listed among the top 10 deported Nationalities, while other African Countries are grouped under a broader category.

Countries such as Mexico, India and Haiti recorded higher overall numbers of deportations.

The development has sparked conversations within migrant communities and advocacy groups, particularly as Canada debates new immigration and border security reforms that critics fear could further restrict access to asylum and legal protections.

Despite the deportations, Canada continues to attract a significant number of Nigerian migrants annually, driven by education, skilled work opportunities and family reunification pathways, Global Mirror News gathered.
