Woman Hospitalised After Accidentally Swallowing 17cm Spoon in Freak Domestic Incident

Global Mirror News gathered that a 28-year-old woman in Belgium was forced to undergo a medical procedure after accidentally swallowing a 17-centimetre-long spoon during an unexpected incident at home.

The woman, identified as Reymy Amelinckx from Rumst, Belgium, reportedly swallowed the utensil while eating yoghurt on her couch when her energetic Hungarian Vizsla dog suddenly jumped onto her lap, startling her.

Recounting the experience, Reymy said she had briefly placed the spoon in her mouth so her hands would be free to reply to a message. Moments later, the dog’s sudden movement caused her to jerk backwards, leaving her with a split-second decision.

“It all happened so fast. It was either choke or swallow,” she explained, adding that she felt the spoon slide down smoothly into her stomach.

Global Mirror News gathered that despite the frightening incident, Reymy initially felt no immediate pain and did not inform her boyfriend when he returned from work, choosing instead to act as though nothing had happened. It was only later in the evening that the seriousness of the situation dawned on her.

Medical examinations revealed that the spoon was too large to pass through her digestive system naturally. Doctors advised her to return home and wait for a scheduled gastroscopy to safely retrieve the object.

She described the waiting period as distressing, noting discomfort, bloating and difficulty sleeping as she could feel the spoon shifting inside her body.

Two days later, doctors successfully removed the utensil under local anaesthesia. Although the procedure caused minor internal irritation, medical professionals confirmed there was no permanent damage.

Expressing relief after the operation, Reymy said the experience left her with a sore throat and temporary stomach sensitivity, but also with an unusual personal legacy. “I’ve gained a lifelong reputation as ‘that girl with the spoon’,” she said.

In an unexpected twist, Global Mirror News gathered that Reymy decided to keep the spoon as a memento of the ordeal. According to her, her boyfriend is considering turning it into a piece of art to commemorate the bizarre incident.
