“We Just Stepped Out… Then Chaos”: Ozoro Women Recount Ordeal as Police Move Against Festival Abuse

Fear and outrage have gripped residents of Ozoro in Delta State after disturbing scenes from a local festival turned into what victims describe as a day of chaos and humiliation for several women.
Global Mirror News gathered that what began as a routine outing for some young women quickly spiraled into terror when groups of men reportedly descended on them, chasing, assaulting, and publicly violating their dignity during the controversial annual event.
Reacting to the viral videos, the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, condemned the incident in strong terms, calling it “alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing.” He emphasized that no tradition or cultural observance should come at the expense of citizens’ fundamental rights.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, assuring the public that perpetrators will be tracked down and brought to justice.
Witness accounts obtained by Global Mirror News suggest that the festival, reportedly held annually in March, includes a controversial practice where women are expected to remain indoors. Those who defy the restriction allegedly become targets of harassment by some male participants.
In the now-viral clips, groups of young men were seen pursuing women along the streets, physically overpowering them and tearing at their clothing. The scenes have sparked widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians questioning how such practices persist in modern society.
Some victims, speaking anonymously, described the experience as deeply traumatic. “We didn’t know it would get that bad. We thought it was just a normal day,” one said, recounting how panic spread as the attacks intensified.
The Police have urged members of the public with useful information to come forward to aid investigations, while also appealing for calm as efforts continue to identify those responsible.
The incident has reignited national debate on harmful traditional practices and the urgent need to protect women from gender-based violence, regardless of cultural context.
As the investigation unfolds, many are watching closely to see whether justice will be served and whether this incident will mark a turning point in confronting long-standing practices that put lives and dignity at risk.
