Wale Olanrewaju Clinches Second Term as Ogun NUJ Chairman, Vows to End ‘Godfatherism’ in Council

Comrade Wale Olanrewaju has secured a decisive return as Chairman of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), earning a second three-year mandate after emerging unopposed in a tightly supervised election held at the Inion’s Secretariat in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
The election, which was conducted under heavy security presence from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was overseen by a delegation from the NUJ National Secretariat led by Zone B Vice President, Ronke Samo.
In what observers described as one of the smoothest NUJ elections in recent years, several key positions were filled. Comrade Abiodun Lawal retained his seat as Vice Chairman unopposed. Comrade Bunmi Adigun recorded a landslide victory in the Secretary contest, polling 154 votes to defeat Comrade Modupe Salabiu, who garnered 8 votes. Adefeso Lukman Financial Secretary emerged with 161 votes against Kunle Ibikunle with 19 votes. Toyin Oyelumade Assistant Secretary and Olayinka Ezema as Auditor returned unopposed.
Delivering his acceptance speech to a jubilant crowd of journalists, Comrade Olanrewaju expressed gratitude for the widespread confidence reposed in him.
He declared that the victory belonged to every practising Journalistic in Ogun State, stressing that his first term laid a foundation for stronger professionalism and improved welfare.
He pledged to consolidate on past achievements while taking new steps to strengthen transparency in the union. Olanrewaju also addressed internal politics within the Council, declaring that his re-election would “finally bury the era of godfatherism in Ogun NUJ,” a comment that drew loud applause from delegates.
He assured members that his second term would prioritise training, capacity building, press freedom advocacy and a more united professional community across the State.
