UK Jails Nigerian Student for Raping Stranded Teenage Bus Passenger

A Nigerian Postgraduate student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl who was left stranded after a bus journey in Morley, Leeds.

Chiemka Okoronta, 29, lured the teenage passenger under the guise of offering a shared taxi when her bus terminated early and her phone had died, leaving her vulnerable.

Instead of taking her home, he diverted the taxi to his flat, locked her in a bathroom, and raped her multiple times. The victim eventually escaped and managed to contact the Police using a stranger’s phone, leading to Okoronta’s arrest.

The court found him guilty of three counts of rape and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with an additional three-year extended licence period, and must register as a sex offender for life. Authorities have also confirmed that he will be deported to Nigeria after serving his sentence.

The presiding judge described Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” and emphasized that his actions were premeditated, exploiting the victim’s vulnerability.

The teenager, in her impact statement, revealed the severe emotional trauma she has suffered, including nightmares, flashbacks, and anxiety that has disrupted her daily life.

This case highlights the risks faced by vulnerable individuals in public spaces and underscores the importance of reporting sexual offences promptly.

UK authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting minors and ensuring that perpetrators of serious sexual crimes face full legal consequences.
