UAD Requests NUC To Suspend LASUSTECH’s VC Pending Investigations

The United Action for Democracy (UAD), a Civic Coalition committed to Accountability, Transparency, and Democratic Governance in Nigeria’s Public Institutions has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to immediately suspend the Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, pending the conclusion of relevant investigations.

According to a petition dated August 17, 2025, signed by its General Secretary, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, the group urged NUC to exercise its oversight and regulatory powers concerning grave developments at the Institution.

“We draw your urgent attention to credible and widely reported allegations of gross misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office involving the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, totaling over N2 billion alleged financial misappropriation”. He stated.

“The allegations, currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-corruption Agencies, include – flagrant violation of the Lagos State Procurement Law; Collusion with Internal University Officials to inflate contracts and divert Public Funds; Use of LASUSTECH’s Wema Bank account for questionable and suspicious transactions; and diversion of funds designated for Academic Accreditation and Institutional Development,” the petition read.

UAD noted that despite the gravity of the issues, Professor Odusanya remains in office, actively presiding over Institutional operations. “This continued occupancy is inimical to the integrity of ongoing investigations, undermines whistleblower protection, and exerts undue influence over witnesses.”

The group noted that the reputational damage to LASUSTECH threatens its ability to attract quality academic talent, research grants, and international partnerships, which runs counter to the NUC’s mission of fostering academic excellence and institutional integrity in Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Sector.

“In light of the above, we respectfully petition the NUC to urgently invoke its disciplinary and regulatory codes, including those empowering the Commission to recommend or direct the immediate suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, pending the conclusion of relevant investigations; engage with the Lagos State Government, urging the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to act swiftly in safeguarding the integrity of LASUSTECH

Also to mandate an independent forensic audit into the University’s finances over the last two years; and ensure the protection of Whistleblowers, University Staff, and other individuals providing critical information.

“We believe this intervention falls squarely within the NUC’s responsibility to uphold good governance and standards in Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions. The current scenario at LASUSTECH is unsustainable and constitutes a dangerous precedent if left unaddressed.

“We urge the Commission to act with urgency, firmness, and impartiality, knowing that your leadership at this juncture will restore confidence in regulatory oversight and protect the educational aspirations of thousands of young Nigerians,” the group noted.
