U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Lagos Consulate Close for Presidents’ Day Observance

In a formal announcement on its official X handle, the United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have confirmed they will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria stated:

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.”

Presidents’ Day is a Federal holiday in the United States originally established to honour George Washington, the Nation’s first president. Over time, the celebration has expanded to recognize the contributions of all U.S. Presidents and their influence on both National development and Global Affairs.

The embassy added historical insight on Washington’s legacy:

“#DYK? George Washington created the first ‘Badge of Military Merit,’ which later evolved into the Purple Heart, a prestigious military decoration that still bears his image today.”

The Purple Heart remains one of the most recognized U.S. Military honors, awarded to service members wounded or killed in action, highlighting the enduring impact of Washington’s leadership.

According to Global Mirror News sources, this observance is part of the U.S. tradition of emphasizing Presidential legacies and historical education, even at International Missions. Normal diplomatic and consular services at both locations are expected to resume on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
