Two Killed, Four Hurt in DICON Explosion

Two people were killed and four others injured on Saturday, 20th September , 2025 when an explosion rocked the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) factory in the Kakuri area of Kaduna.
The blast occurred at the factory’s disposal pit while specialists were destroying expired raw materials, including ammonium nitrate, primer caps, and propellants stored in old bunkers.
Victims included a military officer and a civilian staff, both of whom died on the spot.
The four injured were first taken to St. Gerard’s Catholic Hospital in Kakuri before being transferred to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital for advanced treatment.
DICON management confirmed the incident, noting that the corporation had begun safe disposal of expired ordnance since July 2025.
Most of the hazardous materials had already been destroyed before Saturday’s tragedy.
“This unfortunate incident happened during the destruction of the remaining expired items at the disposal pit,” management stated, assuring that the situation was under control.
The Defence Headquarters has ordered a probe, while a Board of Inquiry has been set up by DICON to determine the immediate cause and strengthen safety protocols.
The Kaduna State Government has called for calm, pledging support for the victims’ families and promising improved safety oversight.
Founded in 1964, DICON remains Nigeria’s main military production hub, but the incident has once again raised concerns over the handling and storage of explosive materials.
