Two Killed as Trucks Collide on Abeokuta–Igboora Expressway

Global Mirror News reports that at least two people lost their lives following a fatal collision involving two trucks on the Abeokuta–Igboora Expressway in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.
The crash, which occurred at the Alamutu axis of the highway, involved a Cabstar mini truck and a Volvo articulated truck. Preliminary findings by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicate that excessive speed and poor road conditions contributed significantly to the incident.
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed that the Cabstar truck reportedly hit a pothole while in motion, causing the driver to lose control and veer into the path of the oncoming Volvo truck. The resulting head-on collision led to the instant death of an adult male and an adult female.
According to traffic officials, four occupants were involved in the crash. While two victims were confirmed dead at the scene, the remaining occupants sustained no life-threatening injuries. The deceased were later released to their relatives for burial in line with Islamic customs.
Emergency responders and traffic officials promptly arrived at the scene to clear the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic, which had been disrupted for several hours following the crash.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the poor state of highways, reckless driving by heavy-duty vehicle operators, and the growing number of fatal road accidents in Ogun State. Authorities have renewed calls for motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, especially on highways affected by road defects.
The tragedy follows a series of recent fatal crashes along major expressways in the state, underscoring the urgent need for improved road maintenance and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
