Two Kano Lawmakers Die Within Hours, Assembly Thrown Into Mourning

The Kano State House of Assembly has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden deaths of two of its serving members, who reportedly passed away within hours of each other on Wednesday.

The first casualty was Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungoggo, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, who was confirmed dead on December 24, 2025.

Reports indicate that Ungoggo died at the Assembly complex after a brief illness while still actively discharging his legislative duties.

The tragic development was officially confirmed in a statement issued by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, who described the lawmaker’s passing as a painful loss to the Assembly and the State at large.

“The late Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungoggo died while in active service at the Kano State House of Assembly. He is survived by his wife and children,” the statement read.

Ungoggo’s death came as a shock to colleagues and constituents, given his strategic role as chairman of the powerful Appropriation Committee, a position central to the State’s budgeting and fiscal planning processes.

Barely hours after the announcement of Ungoggo’s demise, the Assembly was hit by another devastating blow with the death of Hon. Aliyu Sarkin Daneji, another serving lawmaker.

The back-to-back losses cast a sombre mood over the legislative complex, with lawmakers and staff struggling to come to terms with the unprecedented tragedy.

Reacting to the incident, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Falgore, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased lawmakers, their constituents, and members of the Assembly.

He described the loss as irreplaceable, noting that both lawmakers were committed public servants who contributed significantly to legislative activities in the State.

“Hon. Ungoggo’s death, in particular, comes at a critical time when the people of Kano needed his experience and dedication the most,” the Speaker said.

Ungoggo was laid to rest later on Wednesday evening at in his hometown, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The deaths of the two lawmakers have sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, political associates, and residents of Kano State, many of whom described the incident as one of the darkest days in the history of the Assembly.
