Trump Ends UK Visit with Sharp Rebuke of Putin

United States President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment in Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying the Kremlin strongman has “let him down” over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The remark came as Trump rounded off his three-day state visit to the United Kingdom on Thursday.

The American president, who met Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers after receiving a royal welcome from King Charles III at Windsor Castle, acknowledged that he had expected Moscow to be more receptive to calls for peace.

“I thought it would be easier,” Trump told reporters. “I know him well, but he’s really let me down.”

Trump called on European nations to increase pressure on Moscow, particularly through energy sanctions, stressing that reducing dependency on Russian oil was crucial to weakening Putin’s position.

Despite his criticism of Russia, Trump used the visit to reinforce the close ties between Washington and London.

Both leaders hailed a new bilateral agreement on advanced technologies covering artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and nuclear energy.

Trump described the deal as “the best” between the two allies, praising Britain’s role in sealing the partnership.

On the Middle East, however, differences emerged. Trump publicly disagreed with Starmer’s plan to move towards recognition of a Palestinian state, warning against premature decisions while hostilities persist.

He also vowed to support the UK in tackling illegal migration, hinting at possible security cooperation that could extend to military assistance.

The visit was capped with warm words for the British monarch. Trump said his meeting with King Charles III was “one of the greatest honours of my life.”

In return, the King commended the US leader’s earlier stance on Ukraine and urged both governments to prioritise climate action for the sake of future generations.

As Trump departed, analysts noted that his candid criticism of Putin contrasted sharply with his past remarks, marking a more pointed stance toward Moscow while reaffirming America’s enduring alliance with Britain.
