Truck Crushes Car in Lagos, Man Dies, Wife Battles for Life

A tragic accident occurred on Thursday February 12 morning at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos State, leaving a man dead and his wife critically injured after a granite-laden truck toppled onto their vehicle.
Global Mirror News gathered that the fatal crash involved an articulated truck reportedly travelling from the Epe axis at high speed before suffering a brake failure near Eleko Junction. The truck, heavily loaded with granite, lost control and veered off its lane, colliding with a Toyota saloon car heading inward Epe from the Ajah corridor.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the mechanical failure led to a catastrophic loss of control, causing the truck to overturn and crush the smaller vehicle.
The devastating impact trapped the male driver inside the mangled wreckage. Emergency responders from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), with assistance from passersby, worked swiftly to rescue the occupants. However, the man was confirmed dead at the scene due to the severity of injuries sustained in the crash.
His wife, who was also in the vehicle, suffered life-threatening injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
Global Mirror News further gathered that the driver of the truck fled the scene shortly after the incident. Operatives of the Akodo Police Division were present to secure the area and maintain order during the rescue and recovery operations.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as avoidable. He stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, and cautioned motorists against reckless driving and excessive speed.
The accident caused temporary traffic disruption along the busy expressway, with officials working to clear the wreckage and restore normal flow of vehicles.
Authorities have commenced investigations into the incident as efforts continue to apprehend the fleeing truck driver.
