The Journalism Community is mourning the loss of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a pioneering Journalist and wife of the late MKO Abiola, who passed away yesterday at the age of 82. Dr. Abiola was a renowned Journalist, Publisher, and former Managing Director of Concord Newspapers. She made history as the first Nigerian woman to become the Editor-in-Chief of a Daily Newspaper in Nigeria.

Dr. Abiola’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which she worked with several prominent Newspapers, including Daily Sketch, Daily Times, and National Concord. She was a recipient of the prestigious DAME Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the second woman to receive this honor after Mrs. Omobola Onajide. Dr. Abiola was also granted the Eisenhower Fellowship in 1986, a testament to her exceptional contributions to Journalism.

Dr. Abiola was educated at the University of Ibadan, where she earned a Degree in English and Drama in 1969. She later pursued a Master’s Degree Programme in Journalism in the United States and obtained a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University in 1979.

Dr. Abiola’s career was marked by several notable achievements. She was a Features Writer at Daily Times and rose to become the Group Features Editor. In 1986, she was promoted to Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, a position that cemented her legacy as a trailblazing journalist.

Dr. Abiola’s contributions to Nigerian Journalism are immeasurable. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of Journalists. May her soul rest in peace.
