Trailblazing Honor: Monument to Celebrate Nigeria’s First Space Traveler – Salis

Renowned American sculptor Steve N. Barber is set to create a monumental sculpture in honor of Chief Owolabi Salis, the first Nigerian to travel beyond the Kármán line into space. This historic tribute celebrates Salis’ groundbreaking achievement as a Nigerian Astronaut and his contributions to Global Space exploration.

The Sculpture promises to be a timeless symbol of inspiration, expected to endure for at least 1,000 years, featuring inspirational inscriptions that will ignite enthusiasm for space exploration among Nigerians and Black Communities Worldwide. Scheduled for completion on July 4, 2026, in the United States, coinciding with America’s Independence Day, the monument is expected to draw significant Media attention and Global recognition.

Salis’ Achievements

First Nigerian in Space: Salis made history on June 29, 2025, traveling to space beyond the Karman Line aboard Blue Origin’s NS-33 suborbital mission.

Exploration Milestones: He’s the first Black African to visit both the Arctic and Antarctic regions within a single season, showcasing his adventurous spirit and determination.

Inspiration: Salis hopes his journey sparks interest in science and space exploration among young Africans, inspiring future generations.

Philanthropy: Salis is the founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Development Organization, supporting sustainable development and justice in oil-producing regions of Nigeria.

About Owolabi Salis

Profession: Salis is a US-based Lawyer and Certified Public Accountant with over three decades of experience.

Education: He holds degrees from Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Lagos.

Awards: Salis has received numerous Awards for his contributions to Community Service and Social causes, including the Best Governorship Candidate for Peace Award and the Lagos State Police Command Peace Award.

The Sculptor’s Vision

Barber believes the monument will serve as a lasting tribute to Salis’ achievements and a symbol of National Pride. He hopes to attract support from the Nigerian Government, Tech Billionaire Jeff Bezos, or major Corporate sponsors for the project. After its unveiling, the sculpture will be transported to Salis’ birthplace in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where it will stand as a symbol of National Pride and Inspiration for future generations.
