Tragedy on Ogun Roads: Teenager, Three Others Killed in Twin Crashes
Ogun State witnessed a dark day on Tuesday as two separate road crashes claimed multiple lives, leaving families shattered and communities in grief.
The first incident occurred at Alagbon, along the Owode-Atan Road, where a white Suzuki minibus rammed into a stationary Sinotruck laden with cement.
The collision left four people dead including a teenager and three others critically injured.
According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the tragic crash involved 11 passengers, two males and nine females. TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said the victims included one male, two adult females, and a teenage passenger who all died on the spot.
He attributed the crash to recklessness on the part of both drivers, noting that the tragedy could have been avoided if proper safety measures were taken.
“The bus driver was speeding and rammed into a breakdown truck that had no caution sign. The negligence of both parties caused this fatal crash,” Akinbiyi stated.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and TRACE arrived at the scene shortly after, evacuating the injured victims to the General Hospital, Idi-Iroko. The wrecked vehicles were later removed, and traffic flow was restored along the busy corridor.
In a separate but equally tragic incident, a pregnant woman lost her life in another auto crash along the Sagamu Expressway corridor.
The accident, which involved a payloader, a Toyota Camry (AAB-248 MK), and a commercial tricycle (JGB-643 VD), was reportedly caused by overspeeding and loss of control by the Camry driver.
TRACE confirmed that the Camry veered off its lane and rammed into the moving tricycle, killing the pregnant woman instantly. Several others, including the driver and male passengers, sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by good Samaritans.
Akinbiyi once again appealed to motorists to maintain safe driving habits and adhere to traffic regulations.
“These recurring accidents are needless deaths caused by impatience, overspeeding, and neglect of basic road safety rules,” he lamented.
The series of fatal crashes have once again raised concerns over rising road carnage in Ogun State a major Gateway to the Southwest with some of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
