Tragedy in Lagos
A devastating incident has occurred in Lagos, where a woman lost her life after falling into a 170-foot deep well at a construction site in Ijegun. The tragic event has sparked widespread concern over safety measures at construction sites in the state.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened on Monday, June 30, around 7:34 p.m. at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, close to Fadeko International Hotel. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, fell into the deep well located at the front of a one-storey building still under construction. The structure, comprising six two-bedroom flats on a fenced 648-square-metre plot, posed a significant risk due to the uncovered well.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call and promptly dispatched responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station. Given the complexity of the situation, a multi-agency operation was launched, involving the Nigerian Police, LASAMBUS, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and other emergency responders. After a prolonged and challenging rescue operation, the woman’s body was finally recovered on Thursday, July 10.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and appreciate the efforts of all agencies involved.” Adeseye emphasized the importance of safety at construction sites, noting that “a 170-foot uncovered well is a severe hazard that must never be left unsecured.”
The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has taken over the case and is conducting further investigations into the incident. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has highlighted the need for construction sites to prioritize safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
