Tinubu Nominates Prof. Joash Amupitan as INEC Chairman, Seeks Senate Approval

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially nominated Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and has forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation.
The President’s letter of nomination was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Citing Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), President Tinubu stated that the law empowers him to appoint the Chairman and members of the Commission, subject to Senate approval.
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Attached is his curriculum vitae,” the President’s letter partly read.
Professor Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar from Plateau State, is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Jos.
He has also served on various national committees focused on constitutional development and electoral reform.
His nomination follows the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and comes at a time when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to strengthen its electoral processes and deepen democratic governance.
If confirmed, Professor Amupitan will lead the Commission into a new phase of reforms aimed at enhancing electoral transparency and voter confidence ahead of future elections.
