Tears and Triumph: 100 Nigerian Schoolchildren Freed Amid Heightened Security Efforts

Relief and jubilation swept through Niger State on Monday as about 100 children kidnapped from St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri last month were safely reunited with their families.

The children arrived in Minna in a convoy of minibuses flanked by Military vans and armoured vehicles, greeted by parents, Local Officials, and Governor Umar Bago.

For many families, the weeks since the abduction on 21 November were filled with fear and despair. “I watched helplessly as gunmen snatched my son,” said one father, tears streaming. Parents had waited anxiously outside the school, desperate for any news.

The reunion brought overwhelming relief, though many families now face the challenge of helping their children recover from the trauma of captivity.

The circumstances of the release remain unclear. Authorities have not confirmed whether it was achieved through negotiation, Military action, or ransom payments, citing security reasons.

Neighboring Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule credited the Federal Government for playing a key role in securing the children’s return, describing the behind-the-scenes efforts as “sensitive and ongoing.”

Earlier, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu met with church leaders, reassuring them that the children would be rescued.

The Papiri abduction is part of a worrying trend of attacks on schools and Religious Institutions across Northern and central Nigeria.

In the days preceding the St Mary’s incident, dozens of students and worshippers were abducted in attacks in Kwara and Kebbi States, with all victims eventually released. Last week, gunmen abducted worshippers in Kogi State and a bride with her bridesmaids in Sokoto State.

While many analysts attribute the kidnappings to criminal gangs seeking ransom, Government Officials warn jihadist groups may also be involved.

Although Nigeria has outlawed ransom payments, negotiations with kidnappers continue in some cases, reflecting the complexity of the security situation.

Authorities emphasize that victims come from all faiths and that efforts are underway to improve safety in schools, churches, and mosques.

The recent spate of kidnappings has also drawn International attention, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated security responses to protect children and communities.

For now, the focus in Minna and Papiri is on healing, gratitude, and hope. The children are home, their families’ prayers answered, and the Government’s intensified security efforts show a renewed commitment to preventing further tragedies.
