Tanker Explosion Sparks Inferno on Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway

A major fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of Friday, 3rd October, 2025, following the crash of a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker on the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway.
The incident, which happened around 1:00 a.m., was attributed to excessive speed and loss of control by the tanker driver.
The fallen vehicle spilled its content, igniting a massive inferno that consumed a truck and a tow vehicle parked along the roadside.

The blaze also destroyed solar-powered light panels and a PHCN power cable supplying electricity to Mowe and adjoining areas.
Although casualty figures remain uncertain at press time, rescue and emergency teams including the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Fire Service, Nestlé Fire Service, the Police, Amotekun Corps, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) swiftly mobilized to the scene.
The combined efforts helped to contain the fire and commence a decantation process.
TRACE Public Relations Officer, Cdr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the development, urging motorists and residents to remain calm and cooperate with diversion measures put in place to ease traffic flow along the route.

“Normalcy is gradually being restored, and we appeal for patience from the motoring public.
Any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident is deeply regretted,” Akinbiyi said in a statement issued on behalf of the Acting TRACE Commander General.
Authorities have assured that traffic will be redirected until full clearance of the wreckage is completed.
