Tanker Driver on the Run After Fatal Crash Claims Dispatch Rider in Lagos

A tanker driver has fled the scene after a deadly collision with a dispatch rider along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, leaving the rider dead.

Global Mirror News gathered that the tragic incident occurred around the Cele Bridge corridor, a busy stretch of the expressway, according to a statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Wednesday.

The statement revealed that the HOWO tanker, heavily laden with diesel, rammed into the dispatch motorcycle, trapping the rider beneath the vehicle. The impact led to the rider’s instant death.

According to LASTMA spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, “Security reports indicated that the tanker, while in motion, forcefully collided with the dispatch motorcycle, resulting in the rider being crushed underneath and dying instantly.”

Following the accident, LASTMA officials quickly secured the area using cones and caution tape to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of other road users.

The Agency noted that the prompt response was necessary to avert additional crashes along the ever-busy highway.

Global Mirror News further reports that the tanker driver abandoned the vehicle and fled immediately after the incident.

The tanker has since been handed over to the police for investigation.

Police operatives recovered the remains of the deceased from beneath the truck and transported them to a morgue in Yaba.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as both tragic and avoidable.

He extended condolences to the victim’s family and urged the Police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that the fleeing driver is apprehended and prosecuted.
