Super Eagles Striker Awoniyi Risks FA Sanction Over Religious Goal Celebration

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is facing the possibility of disciplinary action from the The Football Association after his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Global Mirror News gathered that the Nigerian International, who came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, made a strong impact as the club intensifies its battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

However, his celebration has now drawn scrutiny. Awoniyi removed his shirt after scoring, revealing an undershirt with the inscription “God is the Greatest.” While he was immediately issued a yellow card for taking off his shirt, the display of a religious message could result in further sanctions.

Under Law 4 of the International Football Association Board, players are not permitted to display political, religious, or personal messages on their equipment or clothing.

The rule states that players must not reveal undergarments containing such inscriptions, with violations subject to sanctions by competition organisers, Mational football authorities, or FIFA.

As of press time, the FA has yet to announce whether it will take additional disciplinary steps against the Super Eagles forward.
