Super Eagles Captain Wilfred Ndidi Mourns Father After Fatal Road Accident

Nigeria’s National Football captain and Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is mourning the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died in a fatal road traffic accident in southern Nigeria—an incident that has drawn International sympathy and renewed attention to road safety challenges in the Country.

The accident occurred on Tuesday January 27 in Umunede, Delta State, where the retired Military Officers was reportedly involved in a vehicular collision. He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor but was later pronounced dead.

The tragic development was confirmed in an official statement released by Ndidi’s Turkish club, Beşiktaş, which described the loss as devastating and extended condolences to the midfielder and his family.

At 29, Ndidi remains one of Africa’s most prominent football figures, respected both for his leadership on the pitch and his consistency in European football.

He recently captained the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he also scored his first senior international goal—an emotional moment he dedicated to his father.
