Sokoto Police Bust Bandit Financing Cell, Dismantle Cross-Border Motorcycle Theft Syndicate in Dual Operations

The Sokoto State Police Command has recorded major Security breakthroughs after arresting suspected bandit financiers in Tangaza Local Government Area and cracking a motorcycle theft network operating across Sokoto and Zamfara States. The two separate operations, carried out on Wednesday, mark a significant advancement in the Command’s efforts to curb banditry, cross-border crime, and rural insecurity.

Bandit Financiers Arrested in Tangaza
In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the arrest of three suspected collaborators of a notorious bandit group. The suspects were allegedly responsible for facilitating the sale of rustled cattle, thereby providing steady financial support to armed criminals.

According to Rufai, the lead suspect, Ruwa Ginyo, identified as the Fulani Head of Gidan-Madi, was arrested alongside two unnamed accomplices.
“Our operatives recovered four rustled cows during the operation, all linked to recent attacks on surrounding villages,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, described the suspects as a crucial part of the “financial engine room” sustaining bandits across the region.
“Cutting off their funding stream is a major victory,” Musa noted, emphasizing that targeting the economic backbone of armed groups is essential to weakening their operational capacity.

He added that more sting operations targeting informants, cattle marketers, and logistical supporters are already underway.

Cross-Border Pursuit Exposes Motorcycle Theft Syndicate
In a separate but equally significant development, the Command’s elite Strike Force Unit dismantled a motorcycle theft syndicate during a daring cross-border raid in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State. The syndicate had been linked to a surge in motorcycle thefts across Sokoto in recent weeks.

Acting on actionable intelligence, detectives traced the movement of stolen motorcycles out of Sokoto, uncovering a well-organised network that ferried stolen motorcycles to neighbouring states for quick resale.

“We followed the trail beyond Sokoto and confirmed that stolen motorcycles were being transported to Zamfara within hours of the theft,” CP Musa explained.

Several suspects were arrested during the raid, and two motorcycles earlier reported stolen in Sokoto were successfully recovered.

Musa said the operation highlights the Command’s expanding operational reach and strengthened collaboration with security forces in neighbouring states.
“If you commit a crime in Sokoto, fleeing to another state will not save you. There is no safe haven anymore,” he warned.

He urged motorcycle dealers, buyers, and livestock traders to always verify ownership documents before engaging in any transaction and to report suspicious movements to security agencies.

“Public cooperation remains our strongest asset. Every credible tip brings us closer to making our communities safer,” he added.
