Six Dead, 19 Injured in Ogun Bus Crash

A devastating accident occurred on Friday along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State, claiming six lives and leaving 19 others injured. The incident happened at Osuponri Village near the ICT Polytechnic, Itori, when a Toyota bus with registration number KJA 851 YH somersaulted due to a tyre burst.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers screaming for help as the bus overturned. “I was traveling in another vehicle behind the bus when I saw it suddenly lose control and somersault,” said an eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous. “It was a terrible sight to behold.”

According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the vehicle was carrying 25 passengers, including seven male adults, 11 female adults, two male children, and five female children. The agency confirmed that six people died on the spot, while 19 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Victim Details:

  • Deceased: 6 (2 male adults, 2 female adults, 1 male child, 1 female child)
  • Injured: 19 (5 male adults, 9 female adults, 1 male child, 4 female children)

The injured victims were rushed to the Ifo General Hospital for medical treatment, where they are currently receiving attention from medical personnel. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

The TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, attributed the cause of the accident to a tyre burst, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle. “The tyre burst while the vehicle was at high speed, causing the driver to lose control and somersault,” Akinbiyi explained.

TRACE’s spokesperson warned drivers against using fake and expired tyres, citing the consequences of such actions. “Drivers are hereby charged to avoid using fake and expired tyres in view of their attendant consequences,” he said, quoting the acting Head of TRACE, Cdr. Omonayajo Elias.

The Agency commiserated with the families of the deceased and advised drivers to exercise caution while driving. “We urge drivers to prioritize road safety and avoid using faulty vehicles,” Akinbiyi said.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the authorities have urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious or reckless driving behaviour to the authorities.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to adhere to traffic regulations. The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has been a hotspot for accidents in recent times, and this incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for caution and vigilance on the roads.

Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased, and we wish the injured victims a speedy recovery.
