Shock in Bissau as President Embaló Allegedly Detained in Fresh Coup Scare

Bissau was thrown into uncertainty on Wednesday after armed men reportedly detained President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in what appears to be a fresh attempt to overthrow his Government.

The reported arrest occurred around 1 p.m. inside the Presidential palace in Bissau, just days after a tense Presidential election from which the main opposition candidate was disqualified, a move that had already heightened political tensions across the Country.

According to The Africa Report, Embaló managed to Communicate with Jeune Afrique, describing the incident as a “coup d’état” allegedly engineered by the Country’s army chief of staff.

In an unexpected twist, the reported arrests extended to other top security and Government Officials. Those allegedly detained include the armed forces’ chief of staff, General Biaguê Na Ntan, his deputy, General Mamadou Touré, and the interior Minister, Botché Candé.

Despite the apparent seriousness of the situation, Embaló said that no physical violence was used against him during the detention.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official Military announcement or confirmation from Government sources. The International Community is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the politically fragile West African Nation.
