Senate Targets Image Reform with Passport Ban

The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill proposing a 10-year International Passport ban for Nigerians convicted of crimes abroad, as part of efforts to protect the Country’s reputation Globally.

Sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), the bill seeks to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act to impose stricter penalties on Nigerians found guilty of offences in foreign Countries.

If enacted, the law would authorize the withdrawal or non-renewal of passports belonging to convicted citizens for 10 years after they complete their prison terms.

Defending the proposal, Senator Bello said the initiative was designed to discourage criminal behaviour among Nigerians abroad and restore pride in the National Passport.

He noted that the negative actions of a few had subjected innocent Nigerians to suspicion and embarrassment in foreign countries.

“The Nigerian passport should be respected everywhere, not viewed with mistrust,” Bello said during the debate.

Several lawmakers backed the bill, describing it as a necessary step toward rebuilding the Nation’s Global image and promoting responsible conduct by Nigerians overseas.

The bill has passed its second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Interior for further Legislative action.
