Sanwo-Olu Mourns Akran of Badagry, Describes His Passing as a Great Loss
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Akran of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran (Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I), describing the revered monarch’s passing as a major loss to Badagry Kingdom, Lagos State and Nigeria.
The late monarch, who was the Paramount Ruler of Badagry and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, died at the age of 89 after spending nearly 49 years on the throne.
In a statement released on Monday and obtained by Global Mirror News, Sanwo-Olu said Oba Akran was a highly respected traditional ruler whose reign was marked by wisdom, unity and a strong commitment to the cultural and socio-economic development of Badagry.
The Governor noted that the late Akran played a key role in preserving Badagry’s traditions and cultural heritage, while also promoting the town’s historical sites and festivals on both National and International platforms, thereby boosting tourism and cultural exchange.
“He was a stabilising force who united diverse interests within his kingdom and worked tirelessly to ensure peace, growth and progress for his people,” Sanwo-Olu said.
According to the governor, Oba Akran also made meaningful contributions to public life, having served as a journalist before ascending the throne, and used his position as a first-class traditional ruler to attract development to the ancient coastal town.
Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the royal family, the people of Badagry Kingdom and traditional institutions across Lagos State, urging them to sustain the legacy of unity, service and development left behind by the late monarch.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of Oba Akran’s soul and asked God to grant the royal family and the people of Badagry the strength to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
