Revolutionizing Teacher Education: FG Launches Bachelor’s Degree Programmers in 15 Federal Colleges


The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the concurrent implementation of Bachelor’s Degree Programmes across 15 approved Federal Colleges of Education. This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s assent to the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023, empowering these institutions to award both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.

The Key Highlights of the New Policy includes:

Dual Certification Model: The policy allows colleges of education to concurrently award NCE and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, enhancing access, improving quality, and modernizing teacher training.

Increased Access and Enrolment: The Federal Government has approved the establishment of more Colleges to increase access and enrolment opportunities.

Review of NCE Minimum Standards: A review is underway to ensure Programmes meet current educational needs and maintain high standards

Implementation Roll out

– Admissions: Admissions under the dual mode will begin in the 2025-2026 academic session, with students admitted for both NCE and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes.

– Monitoring and Evaluation: The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) is intensifying monitoring and evaluation efforts to support effective implementation.

– Collaboration with NUC: The approved Federal Colleges are engaging with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure a smooth transition.

Benefits and Expectations

– Improved Teacher Quality: The dual mode is expected to boost enrolment and improve the quality of Teacher Training, equipping Teachers to manage modern classroom challenges.

– Enhanced Staff Motivation: The Government is making efforts to enhance staff motivation through various initiatives, backed by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Minister’s office.

– Clear Implementation Guidelines: A clear implementation guideline is in place, with Colleges liaising with NUC and following set conditions to make the process seamless.
